I have been trying for a while now to get to a point with the essay where I feel able to begin the writing. However, I keep on stalling this due to my concern with the strength of my argument. Instead of completing a draft of writing what I have decided to do is put together as strong a structure as possible that will enable me to really get a hold on the research I have got so far. The main concept that I am wanting to investigate with my essay is the impact of the attention economy (and the subsequent technologies that have come as a result of it) on creativity and it's practice. The essay topics that I have so far include:
- Relationship between creative output (and/or process) and the attention economy
- Questioning whether Instagram is a sustainable tool for creatives to utilise in their practice
- Ways in which the digital era has changed the creative process, and is this for better or worse?
- Is there a correlation between the distraction caused by digital technology and a reduction in overall creativity. This is interesting to investigate after recently finding out that there is a direct correlation between boredom and creativity. With boredom being a key mental state for creative ideas.
- What are the ways that creativity can exist within the attention economy and be able to thrive?
- Study of the algorithm and how it impacts the way we view and exhibit work online, does this effect creativity/creatives in some way?
I have been looking for artists/practitioners to use for my case study section as well which is proving difficult as it's tough finding those that resonate strongly enough with the ideas I am attempting to address. At the moment I have been looking through the work of Tishk Barzanji and Charlotte Edey whom are both practitioners that explore the "importance of introspection" within their work. Both have a firm understanding of the importance of isolation in terms of their practice, especially in a world in which "we are never not connected". I intend to carry out more research on these two practitioners but think that if I where to use them it would be best to use one of them rather than both - as they are both representing a similar side of the argument that I am having.
