Ian Pollock - Happy Accidents

"I wanted to be the greatest illustrator, the most widely published. For a little while within editorial, I must of been there in the top team, you know. If there was a football team I'd be playing for the number one team then. The question is, are you doing it for yourself, i.e. if you're where suddenly to be jettisoned from your vehicle and end up on the far side of the moon for the rest of your days - but with all your painting equipment - no hope of getting back. Would you sit there quite happily painting or drawing or filming for the soul person in the audience - yourself? What is the point of doing it? I hate the word artist, or creative. I think it's a curse. If someone introduced themselves like "I'm an artist" I think "Oh boring old turd.". Even worse, "I'm a christian", then you can just blank them completely. That's not that I'm against christians I just  don't like religion - cause I'm one of the most profoundly religious people. I could be tormented for hours about a quality of a line becoming from a particular pen, what forces are determining that? Why do we do it? It could be some sort of pretentious self-importance. There's something because we do what we do that makes us slightly different than people that don't do it and you do notice it. And it's somehow, they don't know it, they don't know you're different, but if you are different you can acknowledge it in the twinkle of the eye of someone else who you regard as a brother in this activity - or a sister in this activity." - (http://www.eastwing.co.uk/news/?tag=ian-pollock)

Above is a quote from Ian Pollocks video, 'Happy Accidents' as well as some examples of his illustrative work. I found listening to his stance on why 'artists' and 'creatives' do what they do very interesting. He discusses who his outlook on his practice has evolved over the his lifetime from something that he was initially more extrinsically motivated to be successful at whereas now he has gotten to a point in his life where the motivations behind his work come from a more intrinsic place. This could be a potential case study to look at as I think that his view point could be compared well with the way we produce work to exhibit online nowadays.
