Study Task 6 (Plan)

PLANNING & STRUCTURING AN ESSAY
Suggested Research Question.
This can be a topic or theme, but please try to be as precise as possible.

Did the visual language of the rave scene in the 1980s/90s hold a cultural/societal importance that has been lost in the age of technology?

Does the visual art associated with music hold a cultural significance that is being lost in the digital age?

Introduction:
Summary of your argument - what you are investigating.
In this essay I am looking to investigate the relationship between music and the visual art that is commissioned for album covers, posters, flyers and more. Over the last two decades there have been many advancements in digital technologies, and it seems as though this has impacted the relationship between these two art forms. In this essay I am looking to evaluate the ways that design has had to adapt to fit into the new digital atmosphere of the music industry. What are the benefits of this new realm? How has it impacted the types of art/design we see in this context? And how has that impacted/been impacted by societal/cultural influences?

Which Academic Sources will you reference?
Include a Harvard Referenced bibliography of at least 10 sources. (or what you have found so far)

Case studies (1 - 2 contextual examples) these might be examples of illustration, objects, practitioners / practice, cultural phenomena that relate to your theme or are examples of what your discussion is about.

·       For my case studies I intend to look at imagery created at the time to advertise rave events.
·       This could be in the form of posters/flyers.
·       I then plan to compare these original examples with modern day events flyers/posters.

Contexts and Themes - critical argument outline the FOUR main points of your argument.
Include a sentence which states your argument / theme, and how it will be addressed. It should also include FOUR sentences, each outlining a different element of your central argument.
How these four arguments link to the key sources / theorists and the images.

·       Digital technologies around at the time of the rave scene prompted a unique interaction that produced sounds and sights specific to that era. Will address this through looking into accounts of the time.
·       Also looking contextually at this period. What socio-political events influenced the progression of this movement in the way that it happened?
·       What was responsible for the fall of the rave scene? And how did that impact the visual/design side of it? Use ‘Energy Flash’ to back up argument as Reynolds discusses the government crackdown and its implications on the scene.
·       Discuss the impact that the internet has had on the probability of a movement on the same scale reoccurring in the modern day. Is it possible? If not, why so?
