Reflective Report 1

Show & Tell Presentation:

Presentation Notes:

  • Main research themes/interests include, digital age, 'Instagram replacing the gallery', homogenisation of culture, self-image (creating for an audience not ourselves), what is 'valuable' art in the current age, copyright & authorship.
  • Questions & aims, 'How culture interacts with digital activity', 'Comparison between Renaissance art & Instagram (Curating ourselves)' & 'How can we credit one person when it has been created through an amalgamation of different works/experiences?'
  • Proposed outcome/s or processes, Twistori.com (website linked with live Twitter comments), creating in reaction to these processes.
  • Research methods, reading books - looking at quotes (Richard Seymour, John Berger, Tom Chatfield)
  • Aspects that need defining, shift from being art being considered more highbrow (in some respects) caused by consumerism? The idea of the 'gallery in the pocket' (Instagram), what is the problem with creatives making art FOR instagram (Does this affect the creative process in a detrimental way?)?
  • Aspects that need expanding, value of art/artist when their practice is immersed in social media, globalisation causing cultural homogenisation?

Project Proposal:

  • Investigation into the relationship between the internet/Web 2.0/Social Media and creative practice.
  • Potentially looking into finding a comparison between the traditional painted art pieces and the kinds of posts we see by people on Instagram today.
  • How does the digitisation of the gallery space effect the quality of the art work?
  • What is the evolving impact of social media on creative practitioners and the value of the work that is created? Here it would be useful to look more deeply into creativity and what constitutes to it. Is it something that can thrive in the digital world?
  • Want to maintain a balanced argument so necessary to find arguments for both sides.
  • How will the practical work you create synthesise with these theoretical arguments? Quite a tricky one as the themes are hard to capture visually. Need to give this more thought!
